FASD and Asperger's Workshops
 

The Healthy Families Workshop Series is offering two FREE workshops this fall. No registration required.  Workshops are of interest to parents, caregivers, teachers and other professionals.

WHAT: Cause It’s Not My Fault: Understanding the Behaviour and Learning of Children with Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder with Allan Mountford, FASD Specialist
WHEN: Thursday Nov. 5th, from 7-9pm
WHERE: Peterborough Lions Community Centre, 347 Burnham St.

Alan Mountford, M.Ed. will discuss the environmental adaptations and communication strategies that will help children and teens with FASD live more fulfilling lives.  He will discuss the impact of FASD on parents, caregivers and teachers and what they need to cope.   Alan  works in a Section 23 program for aggressive adolescents, many of which have been affected by FASD.   He is a member of several federal and provincial FASD committees and works with First Nations communities across the country.  You may have heard him being interviewed on CBC radio. He is the author of two handbooks for educators and a CD for judges, crown attorneys and defense counsels.  He follows the teachings of his Ojibwe heritage.

WHAT: The Impact of Asperger’s Syndrome: What Families Need to Know with Dr. Peggy Kirkpatrick, Pediatrician  at the Hospital for Sick Children
WHEN: Thursday Dec. 5th, from 7-9pm
WHERE: Peterborough Public Library, 345 Aylmer St. N.
Dr. Kirkpatrick will describe the criteria for an aspergers diagnosis and how parents can help youngsters prepare for adult life.  A representative from the Peterborough Chapter of Autism Ontario will describe the financial and other local supports for families.  Dr. Kirkpatrick is a developmental paediatrician. She works in the Child Development clinic at the Hospital for Sick Children and has an active private practice in Uxbridge.
